CAMP DODGE: Change Of Command

A change of command is headed for the Iowa National Guard.

Colonel Damian Donahoe will be taking over command of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team on Friday evening.

The 3,300-member brigade is headquartered in Boone but has units all over Iowa, from Fort Dodge to Waterloo.

Colonel Donahoe will be taking command from Col. Michael Amundson.  Amundson has commanded since 2012 but was selected as the Chief of Staff for the Iowa National Guard.

The changing of command ceremony will be held at Camp Dodge at 6 p.m. on September 6.

The public is welcome to attend but will need to arrive by 5:30 p.m. and have photo ID with them to enter Camp Dodge.

REMEMBERING KATHLYNN: Dayton Rodeo Honored Teen’s Memory

Saturday night in Dayton, rodeo-goers honored a teen that was abducted and murdered this spring.

“I want to thank the family of the Shepards for being strong and recognizing that this community is a family.  She will be sorely missed,” said Dayton Mayor Richard Travis.

The Dayton Rodeo called for people to paint the hill purple in honor of Kathlynn Shepard.

The community came together on Saturday night at its annual Labor Day celebration.

This morning a cowboy 5K for Kathlynn was held.

More than 4,000 people in attendance were asked to do what they could to help strengthen Iowa laws to prevent future abductions.

Urbandale traveled to Fort Dodge for their opener.

SKYDIVING BOOGIE: Annual Event Kicks Off

Fort Dodge Airport’s weekend forecast will include skydivers, and lots of them.

The annual Couch Freaks Skydiving boogie, also known as Dollar Daze 2013, kicks off Thursday for the Labor Day weekend event.

The Des Moines Skydivers move their operation once a year up to Fort Dodge to host the annual boogie and help fill Iowa’s skies with divers.

Campers are welcome during the Couch Freaks boogie and visitors are encouraged to come and watch the divers from the bleachers.

Anyone looking to skydive does need to have a valid USPA or CSPA membership and A license or higher.

FARMERS’ MARKET: Des Moines Makes ‘Best’ List

The Downtown Des Moines Farmers’ Market is receiving some high praise.

Culinary website TheDailyMeal.com has placed the market in the #2 spot on its 101 Best Farmers’ Markets in America list.

The site used criteria about the quality and number of products available at the market as well as social media response and reviews to make its list.

The Des Moines market has nearly 300 vendors who sell fruits, veggies, dairy, meat, sweets, craftwork, and art.

Pike Place Farmers’ Market in Seattle took the top spot. It’s open year-round.

Another Iowa market made the list. Fort Dodge’s Market on Central came in at #76.

SCHOOL SHELTER: ICCC Students Get Cooling Option

An Iowa community college is setting up an overnight shelter where students can get relief from the heat.

Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge asked the Red Cross and Webster County Emergency Management for help Tuesday morning.

The college was concerned for the welfare of about 150 students staying in an older dorm building with no air conditioning.

The cooling shelter is set up in classrooms in a campus building. The school sent out an e-mail to students notifying them of their options in this heat wave.

SKYDIVING WEEKEND: Preparing For Annual Boogie

In less than one week Fort Dodge Regional Airport will transform into one big boogie.

The Des Moines Skydivers are moving their operation from Winterset to Fort Dodge for the annual Couch Freaks Boogie.

Skydivers from all over spend their Labor Day weekend here in Iowa for annual skydiving boogie.

Anyone looking to skydive at the boogie is required to have a USPA or CSPA membership and A license or higher.

There is a viewing area on the airport grounds to watch the skydivers.  Prices will be posted at the boogie for skydivers looking to make a jump.
